Radio Days

While I was in Knoxville last weekend, Glenn, Helen and I recorded a podcast which Glenn just put online.

He paired me with the an interview with the Israeli Embassador to the U.S., which is sort of like pairing apples with lobster. I'm on the last third of the recording.

I had never done radio, or anything like that, before, and it was fun. It's a good thing no one is making policy off my statements (the embassador is not so lucky), since I mispoke a bunch. For example, I referred to the Carnival of Bauer as referring to "reality TV", but it is, of course, about the TV show "24".

Check it out, and let me know what other mistakes I made, while I was having too much fun. You can leave comments on Helen's blog.

Gatlinburg

GlennHelen

What a lovely day in Gatlinburg with cousin Helen and her husband Glenn. We had a picnic at Cades Cove (right), and walked by the Cheeleading championships at the Convention Center, without going in (however, our hotel was dripping with cheerleader energy). Gatlinburg

I got a mention on Instapundit.com out of it (along with more silly pictures), as an added bonus. Dr Helen also is brad-visit-blogging. Fortunately, there is no such thing as bad press.

Katrina Viewpoint

When a story is as big as Katrina, the media get to pick and choose their facts. Here's a set of facts different from what you read in the press. They add up to an inspiring, and successful, rescue mission, in the face of a huge (and ongoing) natural disaster.

Language Ring Road

I was talking previously about all the fun you can have with circular translations, and how Babelchat would cause All Hell to Break LooseTM.

It turns out that, among his google hacks, Douwe has given us Poetry in Translation.

I took a few words out on the english->german->french->english Autotranslate-Bahn .

Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
becomes
Piper Peter chose Peck in the vinegar inserted pepper.

And so on. Go play.

"inserted"?

The Visited Countries Mash

Hat tip to Blogenspiel for pointing out this fun web application by Douwe Osinga (now at Google), that maps where you've been.

Create your own visited countries map.

It's a bit misleading, in that it colors an entire country at a time. I've been to Shanghai (and Hong Kong), so China gets colored. I've been to Vancouver, so there goes Canada. There really is a lot more traveling for me to do.

Douwe also gives a great list of google hacks. I think I'll try some of them out...
